How to Remove Wallpaper Border

Step 1: Prep the Space

You may want to move the furniture out of the room you’ll be working in. This will protect it from debris.

You can also cover furniture and the floor with drop cloths for easy cleanup.

Step 2: Test a Method in a Corner

Take a putty knife and try a corner first. The wallpaper should come off easily.

Use a putty knife to lift a corner so you can grab hold of it. Then, pull on it and it will come off in sheets.

Then, put hot water in a spray bottle.

Spray down any leftover bits and use a plastic scraper to scrape off and pull any leftover bits. That’s all you need to remove most types of wallpaper borders.

However, if the leftover bits are stubborn, you can use a wallpaper steamer to help. Just steam and scrape.

And if the wallpaper border is stubborn and will not come off, you will need to use a scoring tool and the following steps.

Step 3: Score the Stubborn Wallpaper

Make holes in the wallpaper border with a scoring tool so that it will off easily.

The purpose of making holes is that the wallpaper will get loosened, and the removal procedure will be easier. Then you will need a wallpaper stripper.

Step 4: Using Wallpaper Stripper

Saturate the wallpaper border with the wallpaper stripper.

The entire area should be thoroughly soaked.

Then let it sit for 5 minutes as it will soften the wallpaper borders.

Step 5: Scrape

Now, you can use a wallpaper scraping tool to remove the wallpaper border.

Push the scraper along the wallpaper backing and the wallpaper will come off in wide sections.

Wipe the blade after each section.

Once you’re done scraping, your walls will be free of wallpaper and stickiness.

Step 6: Wipe

As the last step to clean your wall, spray the wallpaper stripper all over the area again.

Use a clean sponge to wipe down the wall. Now, it will be free of wallpaper residue.

Your walls are now ready for new paint.
