How to Refinish a Porcelain Sink
Step 1: Clean the sink and prepare the surrounding area
At first, you will need to clean the sink thoroughly. Use an abrasive cleaner. You can use tri sodium phosphate for the cleaning process.
You will find this in your nearby hardware store. The chemical will help to remove dirt and other residues.
After that, wipe the porcelain sink with a pad. Let the sink get dried completely. Now, prepare the surrounding area for refinishing the porcelain sink.
Use painter’s tape to cover areas. You can also use plastic sheeting for covering the walls and floors.
Step 2: Sand the porcelain sink
Now, you will need to sand the porcelain sink. You can use medium grit sandpaper and attach it to the clamp.
Sand the porcelain surface of the sink. Make sure that you reach the corners and edges while sanding the sink. Sanding the porcelain sink will make the surface harder.
So, when you apply paint, the surface will be a better foundation for holding the paint. Also, the ups and downs of the sink will become even.
So the refinishing process will be much easier.
Step 3: Use a fine-grit sandpaper
After sanding the porcelain sink with medium-grit sandpaper, you will need to use another fine-grit sandpaper.
It will make the surface of the porcelain sink smoother than before. If there is any dirt left on the sink, use a wet cloth to remove them.
Step 4: Apply a bonding agent
Now, you will need to apply a bonding agent on the surface of the porcelain sink. Apply multiple layers of bonding agents on the surface of the porcelain sink.
Wait for 10 to 15 minutes so that the bonding agent dries appropriately.
Step 5: Apply epoxy primer over the bonding agent
After applying the bonding agent, you will need to apply a thin layer of epoxy primer. Use a brush to apply the primer.
Complete this step very carefully. When you are applying the epoxy primer, make sure that you use the brush in the same direction every time.
If you use the brush in both directions, there will be signs of brush strokes in your porcelain ceiling.
Then wait for another 15 to 20 minutes so that the primer sits on the porcelain sink properly.
Step 6: Repeat step 3
You will need to sand the sink one more time with a fine grit sandpaper. After that, take a soft clean cloth and damp it in water.
Then, clean off all the dust and dirt with the damp cloth. Again, apply the second layer of epoxy primer on the sink.
Apply a thin layer and then wait for about 15 minutes to let it dry completely. It is crucial to wait after applying each layer of coating.
Otherwise, if you apply another layer of coating before letting the first one dry, then the surface of the sink will not be smooth.
There will be ups and downs which you won’t want for your sink.
Step 7: Apply a layer of acrylic topcoat
Use a brush of good quality and use it to apply the layer of acrylic topcoat. Same as before, don’t use the brush in different directions.
Carefully, use the brush and stroke the brush in the same direction. You will need to apply three layers of acrylic topcoat.
After applying the first coat, wait for at least 10 minutes so that it gets dried.
When the first layer of coating gets dried off completely, you will need to apply two more layers. Make sure to wait for 10 minutes before you apply another layer.
Following these steps, you will be able to refinish a porcelain sink successfully. However, after refinishing the sink, you will need to wait for at least 24 hours.
Don’t use the sink for 2 days and after 2 days, you will need to be careful as well.
You will need to wait for a few days so that the porcelain sink doesn’t get any unwanted prints of hands or other things.
