Wooden bed slats also last for a long time which makes these an attractive option for customers.

As every problem has a solution, we also have one for you. You will need to go through a step by step guide to fix your broken bed slat.

How to Fix a Broken Bed Slat

Step 1: Remove the mattress and box springs in case of cracked bed slat

At first, you will need to remove the bed cover and mattress. Then, remove the box springs as well.

In case of a crack on the bed frame, you will need to use a screwdriver to insert it into the crack. You will need to insert the screw from the inside of the bed frame.

There will be chips coming out from the bed frames. You can use a utility knife to clean the bed slat.

Step 2: Inject glue at the crack of the bed frame

You will need to purchase a glue that is strong enough to apply to woods. Inject the glue on the crack of the bed frame.

Smear the glue properly with a stick or rod. You can find this kind of glue in a hardware store.

These glues are made especially for the purpose of repairing wood materials.

Step 3: Place a bar clamp on the bed frame

You will need to purchase a bar clamp if you don’t have one. If you work with wood projects regularly then you should already have a bar clamp.

These are used for woodworking as well as carpentry. Place the bar clamp on the bed slat and make it tight.

However, you will need to keep the bar clamp on the bed frame for one whole night. So, you will need to keep 2 days in hand to fix your bed frame.

Step 4: Calculate the length of the cracked frame

Now, you will need to measure how long the crack of your bed frame is. After measuring the length of the crack, you will need to add 6 inches with the result.

Once you are done measuring the length of the cracked frame, you will need to cut down plywood.

To cut the plywood, you will need a miter saw. If you can’t collect plywood, you can also use scrap wood as an alternative.

Step 5: Drill holes in the plywood with a drill

Now, use a drill to drill holes in the scrap wood or plywood. Keep at least 2 inches of space between each hole.

Then, you will need to apply glue on one side of the scrap wood. Now place the scrap wood on the crack.

Use screws to place the scrap wood with the bed frame crack. You can use a 1-inch screw which will be completely fine.

Don’t use the bed at once after repairing it. Wait for at least one or two days so that the cracks are recovered.

Step 6: Remove the metal brackets in case of joint problems

This problem occurs mostly on antique beds. The joints of the antique beds sometimes loosen after several years of purchasing the bed.

If you want to repair the bed frames of a metal bed which has joint problems, you can replace the metal brackets.

To replace the brackets, the first thing you will need to do is to remove the existing metal brackets.

Remove all the brackets that are installed in the bed frame. These are placed at a 90 degrees angle.

The metal brackets are usually installed at four corners of the bed frame. You will need to remove all of these.

Step 7: Tap the joints with a rubber mallet if you these are loose

You will need a rubber mallet for this step. Check the joints of the bed frame if they are loose. In the case of loose joints, you will need to fix these.

Use a rubber mallet to fix this problem. Then, use a chisel to scrape off the glue after it has dried.

Step 8: Grab a tape to glue it in the tenon

Now, you will need tape. Regular tapes will not work on wood. You will need to purchase a wood tape that is specially made for working with wood projects.

Take a scissor and cut two pieces of tape. Now, you will need to attach the tape on the tenon.

If the joint is too loose, you will need to attach tape on each side of the tenon.

Step 9: With a rubber mallet, reassemble the bed slat

After you are done with all these steps, you will need to reassemble the bed slat. You can use a rubber mallet throughout this process.

You will need to attach the brackets that you removed in the first place. Use screws to attach the metal brackets again.

Make sure you attach the metal brackets tight enough so that the joints don’t become loose again.

If the screws have become old and rusty, you can use new screws to attach to the bed frame.

If you follow the steps mentioned above, you will be able to fix a broken bed slat.

It is a good idea to keep the bed for 1 or 2 nights without using it after you fix it. You will need to let the glue and screws to set properly.
