With the right tools and techniques, you will be able to build garage shelves from 2×4’s and plywood.

Below, we have provided a step by step guide, which will help you throughout the process.

The whole process will take several hours to complete, and you will have a beautiful garage shelve to store your tools and stuff.

How to Build Garage Shelves from 2×4’s

Step 1: Gather the necessary tools and supplies

For this project, you will need a few things. If you are used to working with woodwork projects on your own, you probably have many of these tools already.

However, you will need some basic kinds of stuff like measuring tape, drill, screwdriver, circular saw, and miter saw.

If you don’t have these, you can buy these from a nearby hardware store. It is necessary to have the right tools while working.

Otherwise you won’t be able to complete the project successfully.

Step 2: Clear the working space

If you are planning to build a garage shelve, it is most probably because everything is a mess in your working area.

So, you will need to clear the mess at first. Organize the tools and hardware and keep these aside. Clear the area you will be working on.

Find an empty side of the room to make the garage shelf. You can use any side of the wall you want as long as it has enough space.

Step 3: Cut the oriented strand board with a circular saw

The depth of garage shelves is usually 15-16 inches. It is a standard measurement because you can easily place toolboxes on it.

If you make the depth of the shelve too deep, you will need to reach far out to find your tools. You can use half inch-oriented strand board.

Keep the length of at least 6 feet. Now, you will need a circular saw to cut it properly.

You can also take help from Home Depot if you don’t want to cut it yourself. If you give them the proper measurement, they will do the job for you.

Step 4: Install at least 2 or 3 support brackets

Now, it is time to decide how many support brackets you will need. It is better to use at least 3-4 support brackets.

You can use more if you want to. The support brackets need to strong and tightly installed so that it can support the weight of the tools.

It is always better to have more support brackets just to be safe.

Step: 5 Cut at least three 2×4’s of different lengths

You will need to cut three 2×4’s of different lengths. At first, you will need six pieces of each length.

The lengths of the 2×4’s will be 12, 10, and 8 inches. Now, you will need to cut the 2×4’s again.

At the end of each 2×4’s, hold a speed square to make a cut of 45 degrees angle from the corner.

You can use a miter saw to cut it smoothly. Many people don’t use speed square and cut with their guess.

The problem of skipping to use a speed square is that the finishing will not be nice. You need to be precise while doing woodwork.

Step 6: Screw the brackets with a drive and screws

You can use two and a half inch screws for the brackets. At first, use two screws to place at both corners.

You can place a scrap wood underneath while working. It will help you to screw the ends in an easy way.

Otherwise, you will face trouble while finding the proper place to screw.

Step 7: Find out the location of the wall studs and place the shelves

This step is quite easy but very important as well. You will need a stud finder for this step.

In most of the houses in America, the wall studs are situated 16 inches on center. However, you need to use a stud finder just to be sure.

Mark the areas with a pencil. Now, you will need to place the shelves. You can place the top shelve around 15-17 inches below the roof.

Keep the same height and place the second shelf beneath the top one.

It is a standard measurement to keep any of your toolboxes. If you place the top shelve higher, you won’t be able to reach it which can be quite annoying.

Also, if the lower shelf is too low, it will interrupt your working area. Before placing the shelves, don’t forget to level.

To level the shelves, you will need a spirit level.

Step 8: Attach the support brackets to the wall and assemble the 2×4’s

You can use two and a half-inch screws to attach the support brackets to the wall. Place the first bracket against the wall.

Then, keep a space of 16 inches and then place the second bracket. After that, keep around 30 to 32 inches for the third bracket.

Now, you will need to drill the 2×4’s.

As the final step, assemble the 2×4’s on the support brackets. If you are planning to keep some heavy tools in the garage shelf, you will probably need 3 more brackets to support the weight of the tools.

If you follow this step by step guide, you can build a nice and smooth shelf for your garage workspace.

If you call a professional to do this, they will cost you a lot.

If you do it yourself, you will have a nice experience as well as you will be able to save money.
